Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the right to question particular decisions from the official, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
