Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions
A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored dangerous content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to social media. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has already encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
