The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
